| Summer Oasis, for Montclair
Township teenagers, is in its eleventh year in 2008. This free, six weeks
summer program provides a positive alternative for Township youth. Students
receive instruction each evening and then participate in organized sports.
Certified teachers work with the students in the enrichment and tutorial
sessions that are matched to each participant’s needs. The organized sports
program has proven to be a major attraction of the program that is now
serving about 150 youth annually. Project Oasis Summer Program was created out of concern about the academic achievement gap between African-American youth and their peers. It provides a safe, positive outlet and for young people for whom limited alternatives are available during the summer. The program has grown dramatically in participation since starting in 1997 with 40 students. This success is a result of word of mouth promotion and overwhelming community support. Project Oasis has been able to grow and accommodate an increased number of students each year through the generosity of the following MNDC partners:
