2008
Summer
Oasis
Brochure

A neighborhood-based education program mandating student participation in
the academic and tutorial sessions in order to participate in the recreation and
cultural awareness segments.

Summer Oasis, for Montclair Township teenagers, is in its eleventh year in 2008. This free, six weeks summer program provides a positive alternative for Township youth. Students receive instruction each evening and then participate in organized sports. Certified teachers work with the students in the enrichment and tutorial sessions that are matched to each participant’s needs. The organized sports program has proven to be a major attraction of the program that is now serving about 150 youth annually.

Project Oasis Summer Program was created out of concern about the academic achievement gap between African-American youth and their peers. It provides a safe, positive outlet and for young people for whom limited alternatives are available during the summer. The program has grown dramatically in participation since starting in 1997 with 40 students. This success is a result of word of mouth promotion and overwhelming community support.

Project Oasis has been able to grow and accommodate an increased number of students each year through the generosity of the following MNDC partners:

Financial Support
  • United Way of North Essex
  • Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence
  • Community Development Block Grant Program
  • Numerous individuals and organization throughout Montclair and surrounding communities
In-Kind Services
  • Montclair Police Department
  • Montclair Board of Education

During the 2003-2004 school year Project Oasis expanded to include a Winter Program to achieve these same goals.                top
