The MNDC Adult School was
started in 1976. It has been funded under HUD’s Community Development Block
Grant (CDBG) program. For nearly 30 years, the Adult School has provided
education services to thousands of low and moderate income people from all
21 municipalities of Essex County. Classes for Pre-GED, GED, English as a
Second Language (ESL), Black Seal, and Computer/Word Processing are offered.
High School diplomas are awarded to qualifying students through a
partnership with the Montclair School district.
Since the MNDC Adult School began, two special awards have been given to
students annually:
Muriel C. Ayers Award
One in the name of Muriel C. Ayers is presented to the student who displayed
the greatest determination. Muriel C. Ayers, was Co-founder and former Board
Chairlady of the Montclair Neighborhood Development Corporation. Muriel was
involved in various charities, health initiates, youth programs, and school
projects. The MNDC board felt this award was most appropriate since Muriel
was a champion of determination in fighting for the cause of the
underprivileged.
Lavert Goldie Booker Award
The second award, named for Lavert Goldie Booker, is presented to the
student who has been persistent and diligent in completing the requirements
for a high school diploma. Lavert Booker was a strong and determined woman
and was the backbone of the MNDC organization for many years. The MNDC board
felt this award was most appropriate since Lavert encouraged all students,
no matter what age, to go back to school and complete their studies.
